ford from the factory are programmed very lean to pass emission, "with flying colors" any vacuum leaks will lean it out even more causing ping. it also helps to know what gas you are running on. the reformulated stuff you get in in your big metropolitin areas is very bad for the engine, but cuts down on emmissions. there is also an issue with the heads, chevrolet does'nt have that big of an issue with knock. their SB heads are much better than fords, they have more flow, this seems to be an issue for ford. i have'nt heard much on chrysler.
As far as using AC Delco plugs that is all I have ever used in my Chevys, this is my first Ford. Would going back to motorcraft help anything.
Motorcraft Platinums are the best to get. What ever you do don't get the Bosch as they do cause a car to misfire. I had a Taurus with the same Vulcan 3.0 and boy did it suck (bought them threw away the old plugs and got screwed).

As long as the plugs are the right heat range I doubt they are causing the ping.
Plug wires routed wrong can cause it though. Each engine has 2 plugs that are next to each other and fire next to each other. If the wires for those cylinders are routed close and parallel to each other they can have "induction crossfire" and cause a ping.
People try to make their wires look nice and neat and that can cause a problem.
With a 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8 firing order 6 and 5 are next to each other and fire next to each other. With a 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8 firing order it's 7 and 8 that you have to watch. Make sure the wires cross and are as far apart as possible instead of running close and parallel.
Since your pinging gets worse when it the motor warms up, change to a colder thermostat. Bumping mine from a stock 195 to a 180 really helped when pulling up hills. I doubt this is the root of your problem though.
I replaced my Motorcraft plugs(that were good but rounded and old) with Autolite Platinum plugs. Worth every cent. 90% less pinging, don't notice more power, but the engine seems happier(4.9).
Thanks again for all the input. Racerguy and Hardscrabble can you see the wires arcing at night? Or is this something you just have to try and hope that this is the problem?
Thanks Racerguy for the tip. Over the weekend I reran my # 8 plug wire and took it out for a spin. It still pinged but only once or twice. Then next day I hooked up the boat and took off to the lake, and it didnt ping at all. It still didnt have the power I was hoping for but it solved the pinging problem. It has good power up to about 60mph then after that it takes along time to get to 70mph. Got back home and checked the timing and it was right on 10. Just happy to get rid of the ping. Thanks again!
