There was a mid year change for the front axle seals on my 96. Now the only place I can find this part is the dealer and they have to order it. Why would they change something in mid year when that is the last year for this front axle design? I'm wondering if they ran out of the dana 44 and put one from a f-250 in there. The axle seals that I got from napa where way to small but the ones for a f-250 are the same size. The ford dealer can't tell me what axle I have only their part #. So how can I tell a difference from the dana 44 and the dana 44hd. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know whats going on with this mid year change?
The d44 HD is no different in the 3rd member, just the TTB arms of it are made to accept leaf springs. There shouldn't be a change, maybe he's got the wrong parts. A d44 seal is a d44 seal. This should be in the axle forum and i'll move it shortly.
The reason I put it in this forum is that it deals only with the 96. The axle seals are different the one everyone wants to sell me is smaller than I need.
He also said they made the change in may of 96 so there are not many that the change affected.
