1997 Explorer went to change AT transmission and filter. Removed bolts from pan and took it off but I can't remove it!. It is stuck between the torque converter and I can't move if far enough one way or another to clear the converter and remove it so I can get the old filter off and put the new one in, etc.. How do you do this? It looks like I can remove the bolts from the torque converter flange but I think there's a gasket in there....HELP. Someone please tell me. Thank you
Actually saw where another thread on the same subject had been posted and the prevailing recommendation was to disconnect the drive shaft and move it. I'd prefer not to do that. It sounds like you are recommending removal of something else What is the crossover pipe? Is this the frame piece that is just to the rear of the filter? Thanks again,
Still perplexed. Although it appears you might be referring to the exhaust pipe. My first inclination was to detach the flange where the pipe goes out of the cataytic conveter and goes to the exhaust (about 12" downstream there is a flange which connects the muffler pipes. Anyway, I didn't want to get into this because I think there is a gasket in there that I don't have. Anyway this is a 2-bolt setup so I don't think it's what you are talking about. One bolt looks difficult to get to. Anyway, please be so kind as to clarify your recommendation on the crossover pipe and where I should look to detach it. Thank you
Having been in your position trying to decide what to do, I first attempted to disconnect the exhaust.... don't bother.... to much of a pain to get at the top bolt. Disconnect the front drive shaft from the front diff and swing it out of the way. Use a bungee to hold it up againt the frame rail. Then you can get the pan out. I've done this a couple of times and have not had a problem.
