Headers Or Stock Manifolds??

I have a 2001 F150 5.4L. Is there really any benefit in doing away with the stock manifolds and putting on a set of shorty headers? I guess I am wondering if the change in performance is worth the time spent doing the job. Also with todays engines being so much more advanced - sensors.... is it even worth tampering with the engine's stock components? Any advice or has anyone added headers to their 01' F150??

the computer works fine with smog approved headers and gets you a real 15 hp or more at the weels.

do different brands of headers (Gibson, Edelbrock) provide different sounds under the hood?

Seems to me all headers are louder when your driving the rig. Maybe the thin pipe walls let more noise out. Don't know about sound from different brands. Be carefull of cheaper headers with thin flanges where the header bolts to the head. The thin flanges warp, you will need to use 2 sets of exhaust manifold gaskets to seal the header to the cylinder head. Also on cheaper headers ( I have cheap Dynomax brand), the exhaust opening on the header may be smaller than the opening on the head. This is a bad deal as the header opening restricts proper flow, though all sorts of people run them this way and are happy. I have heard Headman and FPA are recommended.
