Why Dual Alternaters?
Two are nice if you RV. If you are buying new, get the extra one. If not, it is very spendy installing the second, better off with hi-performance aftermarket alternator. However, jfwiw, I had both a camper and 5th wheel I used (at different times) with my good old '89 F250 with 460 and single factory alternator and it did just fine. Just like the added security of second alternator.

Why Dual Alternaters?
Dual alternators are also real nice if you run an on-board welder. In a normal setup, the alternators full capacity is switched from charging the batteries and running your accessories to running the welder. IE your batteries loose their charge after a short period of time welding.
Having the second alternator allows the original one to function as normal and the auxillary one (an aftermarket high capacity unit) to run the welder.
