I know the part your talking about, but really don't know it's purpose.

Is there a reason you are considering not putting it back on?

i put it back on every thing is fine. i just wondered if it was an assembly part. something that held the pads or whatever in place during manufacturing. what ever it is it is still on the truck... thanks

That shield in combination with the silicone "caulk" that comes in the box with the new pads, work together to control squeeking between the backing plate the pad is attached to and the edge of the piston in the caliper. The shield also aids in the disapation of heat produced by the rotor and pad friction to help keep the heat from transferring through the piston and heating the brake fluid.
