hiya!
work is progressing well.. I have run into a small problem I am sure one of you knows.
on the top of the hood, under the windshild there are "slits" where your wipers come out of and warer drains in and air comes in. in a newer truck this "plate" comes out via a few screws.
now... set the way back machine to 1965.
how, without using a saw (NO NO!) do you get this open to remove 40 yrs of leaves crud and crapola??
I noticed this was half full as I was replacing the washer tank... and discovered there are no washer jets pointing at the windshield, so I have to fabricate them somehow (unless they are "different"). I have a dual motor tank unit off an old 280Z, so I had a great idea to run really thin lines up the wiper arms to the pivots and let it "spread" water over as it wipes (when I push the button to make the washer go).
You're talking about the cowl vent panel. The geniuses at Ford welded this piece as part of the cab assembly.
BTW, I have some hoods with washer jets on them. Not in the nicest shape as far as chrome, but if you want 'em, you can have 'em.
I cleaned mine out by removing the vent covers on the inside lower fenders and reaching up, down, and around with various hooks, rods, and other raking objects to pull the stuff out. Other than blocking air flow and being an unsightly mess, I had a friend who didn't clean his soon enough. Finally the pine needles worked thier way into the area behind the heater where the fan resistor is mounted in the back of the air plenum. Started a fire one day while driving to work. Thats when I cleaned mine.
I had this fun chore on my 65 after it sitting a few years....just blasted the heck out of it through grill sending crud to one side or the other....before doin this, If you got the 65-6 type floor vents, open up and reach down and pull crud out before adding more from topside. They did put a fair size drain hole at rear you can see easily from under truck....leaves and twigs are a bear though....I just got a 66 I am gonna have to do it to...oh boy
As to the washers....they were an option that was on the hood itself...usually in Custom cab models, but not always.
Shop vac, water, elbow grease. Some had the windshield washers some didn’t. Dodge uses a squirter nozzle that fits in the slits in the cowl. A little plumbing and a couple of screws gets the job done without boring holes in the hood. Looks nicer as well since they are nearly invisible when installed .
