when i did my 77 i used the plug in the case just in front of the shifter be careful it will look like 2 plugs but one is an adjuster this will give you the actual trans temp not the pan or the line after the converter.
The pan oil *is* the actual transmission temperature but this pressure port has been measured to not be much different than the pan oil. Apparently the pump doesn't add much heat to the oil. In any case it is a convenient spot.

I looked at the left side of the transmission, just in front of the shifter and the netural switch. There is only 1 plug, but it looks like a Band ajuster. And the book shows it to be one too. But there is no other plug, anywhere I can see.
