I just have a few questions about the 9". Is there anyway to check the fluids in it? I didn't see any but maybe they thought I shouldn't need to anyway. and do you have to pull the axle to get to the brakes, it lookes like you do. I saw what looks like a place for a puller and I couldn't get anything to move by hitting it.
there is a fill plug on the left hand front side of the center section, the oil should be up to the filler hole.and no you dont have to pull the axles to remove the brakes.just remove the drums by backing off the brake adjusters and pull the drums off.
My fill plug must be covered up with stuff because I've never seen it. I'll look sometime tomorrow but thanks for the help. What do you mean by brake adjusters?
I pulled off the little clips but I thought it should just pull out and it didn't.
first,do you have the brake drums off?if not,on the back side of the backing plates that hold the brake shoes are rubber plugs on the bottom of the backing plates.remove those plugs and turn the star wheels so the brake shoes come away from the drums.i dont remember which way to turn the star wheels.i always get that wrong when i do them, but you will know when you start turning them.when you get that figured out the brake drums should pull off from the axle flanges.
dusty, there should be a huge nut on the back side of the center section. Remove it poke your finger in the hole, if you can get any on your finger tip your level should be ok.
You can not pull the axles on a 9" without pulling the drums first.
dusty, I applied Release-all and tapped the drums for some time with a ball peen after backing off the brakes. I didn't have any luck until one member suggested using a torch to heat the drums...then 'pop' they just let go! Worked like a charm! Good luck.
Aright i realize this might not happen alot but ,when you get to swapping
hogs heads around you can run into some hogs heads that dont have a fill hole
(That should be on the drivers side of hogs head). When mixed with some rearend housings that dont have a fill hole at all then you are left with no other choice but to put one in the housing. I ran into this problem at about
2am the night before the F-100s in Tenn. Had the rearend in all sealed up and
no fill plug i ended up filling it though the vent and guessing how full . later i welded in a bung for a filler.
