I am new to this game so you will have to bear with me. I know this same question probably has been asked dozens of times before, but here we go again. What 4x4 auto transmissions will match the diesel bolt pattern? I have heard that a Ford "Big Block" pattern is the same as that of the 6.9 and 7.5 litre diesel. Is this true? Also what is determined as "Big Block". Is that any 351 and 460 engine? Was there an AOD made that boted up to the diesel engines, or just the EAOD. Does anyone make an adapter to bolt an AOD up to a diesel. Would the AOD handle the power of a diesel? If anyone can spare the time , could you help me out on these issues. Regards, Trevor Shelton.
its an E4OD not EAOD.the bolt patterns from a gas sucker to a diesel are not the same.i dont think they ever put an AOD behind a diesel.even if they did,i dont think it would work because of difference in shift points and such.they did put C-6's behind gas ans diesels,but they are not they same because of the same reasons as above.
"Big Block" and "Small Block" is really a Chevy thing. Fords come in many bolt patterns including the classic small block 289-302-351W, the medium sized 351C (and I think 351M?), the large FE series 332-352-360-390-410-427-428 and the enormous 427-460 (and I think the 370?) All of which have different bolt patterns. Not to mention the antique MEL v8s.
I think the diesel transmissions use an adapter plate on the engine that makes them like a 460 block but I don't know about that. What I do know is that the diesel automatics have vastly different shift points and operating strategies than the same model gas engine and there is little to no documentation on the differences so changing one over would be a hard job. The transmissions available were the C6 and the E4OD. No way an AOD would hold up to the diesel at all. Even the E4OD self destructs regularly.
