My engine runs perfect but sounds like a sewing machine. It sounds like valve clatter. I am not talking about injector noise either. From the inside it is quite. If you stand outside of the truck or pull into a drive through you can it hear it clattering away. I changed the oil and it had no effect. Is this three valve motor noisy?
I would'nt even speculate. Get that thing towed to your dealership asap. Unless you bought a diesel, that is not normal. Drive another like truck on the lot and you'll find out what it should sound like. Very quiet.

Reason: add
They all do it. I complained about mine so we checked 5 other 5.4 trucks on the lot and they all sound the same. You have to lift the hood and you can hear it on both sides of the engine.
The funny thing is when I lift the hood it seems to get quieter. You can hear it really well at the wheel wells on both sides. I have 5,000 miles on the truck and it has done it from the day I got it. I just expected it to be as quiet as my old 5.4.
It is true in the days of solid lifters " Runs like a sewing machine" was a good thing. Today I expect to hear no engine noise (except from the exhaust).
Glad to hear that someone else has the same issue. Most people don't notice it.
