E40D problems after rebuild
The problem is when I picked up the truck I immediatly went to the freeway to give it a test. As soon as I got off the freeway and came to a complete stop, the truck was acting like it was in neutral. The truck actually rolled backwards and the RPM's just went up. So i shifted the truck to 2nd on the column and then the truck was able to move. After I got moving i was then able to put it back into drive.
I immediatly drove back to the mechanic to complain. I picked the truck up the next day and the mechanic told me that due to the size of the torque converter there was air trapped in it. For 2 days I drove the truck around town with an occasional freeway and the tranny did fine. But today I made a 100 mile trip on the freeway and after about an hour going 70 I hit traffic and had to stop. As soon as I tried to get moving again the transmission did the same problem!! (so i had to shift to 2nd every time I made a complete stop, just to get moving)
I was wondering what the problem is? Has anyone has a similar problem?
Couldn't be air trapped in the torque converter. What should I tell the mechanic?
Thanks for the help

I am guessing it might be a sticky solenoid/valve. The tranny shop I and some friends have used said most shops DO NOT replace the valve body and solenoids. He recommends they do be replaced during a rebuild, especially when your TC sends metal grit thoughout the tranny. He said that the old valve body never really gets as clean as he likes and it often leads to problems just like what you have, so he always replaces them. I have gotten similar advice from a chebby website I visit. Their experience is that the chebby valve bodies get some rough edges inside which eventually cause the valves to hang up and cause problems like yours.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
