Fuel pump differences

I have a 1996 F150 4.9L with duel tanks. I know that the center (mid) tank and the plastic (19 gal) rear tank have the same fuel pump part number (1 per tank). My truck has the 18 gallon rear steel tank and the fuel pump has a different part number. Does any body know what the differences are between the pumps? Is one a little longer than the other (they look the same when comparing parts online). Can a front pump be used in the rear steel tank? I have access to a new front pump and don't particularly want to fork over $160 for a rear pump if I can utilize a front one.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I could be wrong but I think the pumps are the same, the actual sending unit and everything that holds the pump would be different. I would take it apart and see what happens. Worst comes to worse it is different. Good luck!

I just replaced the fuel pump in my 1995 F-150 4.9L. The pump in the front tank went a couple years ago, and i left it, and just used the rear tank. The one in the rear tank just went too. I went and had it fixed, and they said that it was $450(canadian) to fix the front tank, including tax and labour. and the rear tank it was $450 just for the pump.

Yeah, the fuel pumps are the same. It's a pain in the butt to disassemble the whole sending unit housing to get the the actual pump. Once you do, you'll get to this:

Just swap it in, and you're off.
