below 950 rpm,s the oil pressure lite comes on ,any ideas of to why ?? cold i have 25 psi of pressure until it warms up and then it is really low.i have about 24 psi going down the road at about 2200 rpm,s i have a mech and electric oil pressure gage,at 750 the oil pressure just seems to go away ??
Kit, the original oil pressure guage is worth about 35 cents. I would first hook up a real manual type guage and see what you are experiencing. the bypass valve in the rear of the oil cooler is sometimes a problem with oil pressure dropping unexpectedly. Be careful not to experience heavy hammering sounds (main bearings). The engines do run with lower than normal oil pressure. I believe they are a high volume type lube system. Get back to us with your findings.
You better pull the oil cooler off that thing and look for a stuck partially open relief valve. That's your only hope of fixing it without pulling it out of the truck.
Is there a way to rebuild the relief valve. On smallblock chevy's we used to drill and tap the hole and put a pipe plug in it, then we just ran the 2 qt filter and watched the guage.
Is there a way to bypass the relief valve or plug it off and run straight pressure from the pump?
You should be able to disassemble and clean it and get it working again. Check it for corrosion, mine corroded through and started leaking coolant on the ground.
I might be wrong here, but I think the bypass valve is just designed to bypass the oil filter if it is too dirty and clogged. I wouldn't think that would cause a drop in oil pressure.
If it has the typical ford bypass in the filter, wouldn't that take care of excess pressure? If that would be the case, I don't see why you couldn't bypass the relief valve, especially since they seem to have a hard time holding more than 50-60 psi max even when cold.
