LIGHT TRUCK:
1999-2000 RANGER
ISSUE:
Beginning with 1999 vehicle Job 1, the 4R44E and 5R55E are installed in all model Rangers with an automatic transmission. Beginning in May 1999, Ford Motor Company is requesting dealership personnel to contact the Company prior to major overhaul or exchange. Select 1999 and 2000 transmissions will have an orange "PRIOR TO REPAIR" tag («Figure 1») on the fluid pan. The orange tag refers to TSB 99-8. This TSB provides the necessary instructions to be carried out before calling the toll-free telephone number. This toll-free number, (800) 888-5199, is to be used by all U.S. dealers ONLY for further service direction (not applicable outside the U.S.). If you leave a message and do not hear back in 15 minutes proceed with normal repairs.
ACTION:
Between May 1999 and May 31, 2000, do not disassemble these tagged transmissions. Perform the required diagnostic steps, record your findings, and ensure that an overhaul is required on one of these tagged transmissions. Then contact Ford Motor Company at the toll-free number if there is a concern involving one of these transmissions. For 2000 Ranger, after May 31, 2000, follow the 2000 Ranger Workshop Manual diagnosis and repair procedures.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Use the following procedure when servicing these transmissions:
1. Check and record the transmission fluid level and condition.
a. If low, fill to the proper level and check for a leak.
b. If a leak is the only concern, carry out the repair.
2. Check the vehicle harness connectors for the proper installation at the transmission 16-pin case connector, Digital Transmission Range (DTR) sensor, and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor (if equipped).
3. Using your diagnostic equipment, carry out the Quick Tests and record all codes.
4. If no fault codes are present, go to Step 5. If fault codes are present, carry out the required engine pinpoint tests as listed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual first. Carry out the required pinpoint tests for transmissions found in the Workshop Manual. Repair all NON-transmission codes and verify if the transmission symptom still exists.
5. If a transmission symptom still exists, go to Diagnosis By Symptom Routines in the Workshop Manual to determine what components internal to the transmission may be causing the concern. If internal components are indicated, install the appropriate diagnostic equipment that allows you to control transmission operations. Using the appropriate procedure for the selected equipment, carry out road test procedures to verify transmission operation.
6. If the transmission fails to operate and requires an overhaul or exchange, call Ford Motor Company toll-free at (800) 888-XXXX between the hours of 7:30am and 6:00pm EST (All U.S. ONLY).
NOTE:
DO NOT DISASSEMBLE ANY TRANSMISSION PRIOR TO CALLING THIS TOLL-FREE NUMBER .
