Has anyone made up carpeting for their truck? I am changing the colour of my 79 f250 from green to black. My green carpet is a little tatted around where it reaches the doors and has to be cut back. I would prefer a new molded carpet but thats not in the budget right now. Has anyone made their own? My second thought is to dye the one I have and patch in a few strips near the doors. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
TIA
Greg
Well I am planing on redoing the carpet on my 78 ranchero, and here is my master plan.
1 Take old carpet and make a pattern for new carpet.
2 Get new carpet.
3 Take some crazy 2 part epoxy from the shed and glue the carpet down, and hold it with weights from the workout room.
Re install all the seats and stuff and bam! your set........... right?
The only problem I can think of is that lots of glue would be needed.
Thanks for the responce DLS. I used to make custom gun cases with velvet in the similar fashion so I wondering if there was any chemical I could soak the carpet in which would allow it to retain its shape when dry. I am going to try that in the next couple of weeks probably have to cut and sew the floor pan areas.
I used a $10.00 foll from walmart. take out the seat lay out and slow start to form. make it fit loose it will strech in time and you can allways trim but you can't add more if you cut it to small.
Having recently made my own carpet kit for my '74, I can tell you it's not that easy.
The flat areas are no problem, but the compound curves, like around the tranny hump/firewall and areas around the seat and pedals will require relief cuts in the carpet at the least. The end result is not quite as nice as a REAL molded carpet kit, but to the untrained eye, it is not readily apparent...
Make a carpet template first before you start cutting.
Once upon a long time ago, I installed carpet in my '68 Pontiac. You will have to make relief cuts as mentioned in another post. I used some self adhesive carpet tape (I have not seen the tape since, but I have not looked for it.). It was not that hard, but i was not as particular about the end result as I would be now.
