"What size pipes"

I own an '89 F-150, 302, automatic. Time to dump the stock single exhaust for a set of duals. Received a set of DYNOMAX CERAMA-COAT long tube headers. My question, what size pipe should I use? One muffler shop tells me 2", and another shop tells me 2 1/2". The stock pipe diameter is 2 1/4". Also, I'm cutting out the cats, and am wondering which FLOWMASTERS to go with, delta flow 40's or 50's, dont really know the sound difference. Thanks in advance for the help.

Go with the 2 1/2" exhaust, It will let the engine breathe better. Also if your in an area that has to have smog certifications you wont pass without cats in it. Can't help you with the mufflers. I have summit shorty headers with 2 1/2" dual exhaust with turbo mufflers without cats.

flowmaster 40 is the loudest, 40 delta series is slightly less loud but suppose to be more smooth.

I won't have any problems with smog certifications, so no cats are ok. I've heard too large diameter of pipe = loss of power. What would too small of a pipe cause?

same thing. just like anything, there's a happy medium. just gotta find that sweet spot.

Know what you mean about the sweet spot, sadly this will take money. If stock diameter is 2 1/4, which is two manifolds, thru a Y pipe, into one exhaust pipe. Splitting the two sides into its own pipe will (should) automatically let the engine breath easier, and by removing the cats, installing headers, and FM's should be all the better. Been leaning toward 2", 2 1/4" at the most.

Stay with 2.25"-2.5" ,don't use the 2"... I have 2.5" on my 351w and didn't lose any bottom end power. Pulls much harder in top end. Just my 2 cents.....

dk5122, I drive up the side of a mountain everyday so I'm not concerned about top end power too much, more bottom end. I only have a 302, where you have a 351w, that might make a difference in pipe size between you and I. Have you ever heard of a mathematical formula or some kind of computer program that takes into consideration engine size, type of equipment left on or taken off a vehicle that will give you a pretty close pipe size for a certain type of vehicle? Sounds like all this computer stuff is going to my head. BTW, thanks for answering.

Your longtube headers will help alot with low end torque, go with 2 1/4 pipe and you should have no problems at all.
