I'm wanting to swap out the 2.9l for a 302, what all would be involved in that and if anybody knows of anywhere to get a good priced new or rebuilt engine please let me know.
if you want to get a 302, you will have to replace your tranny, if you have the a4dl tranny, its too weak to handle the power from a 302. i would suggest a c4 transmission.the c4 3 speed transmission was used in Ford cars & trucks 1964 to 1981. The transmission length is 11.180”, and with the bell housing measures 17.00”. This transmission was used up against small block Ford engines. This is the most popular transmission when converting to a Ford engine. The 1st gear ratio is 2.46:1; 2nd 1.46:1 and a 1:1 3rd gear ratio. it is a really popular tranny and should be cake to find, i dont know how muck it will cost though.
as for the engine swap, you will need motor mounts for the 302
you will also need a radiator becasue the stock raidiator will not cool the 302
you will need to do some suspetion upgrades to support the extra weight also.the 302 should fit right in the bronco ii, but if you want to get some extra working space, you might concider a 1 to 3" body lift, becaue as i said it would provide extra space to work in and you can easily do a 1 to 3 in body lift on your own, w/o having tomodify steering or wiring.
but just a suggestion.
try the advance adapters website too, they have some bolt on motor mounts and adapter plates just for that. They can adapt to a c-5 (84 b2) but it's probably easier to find a c-4 like hazzard64 suggested. They also have some custom replacement radiators and stuff to make it all come together. Confirming hazzards ideas about the fit... according to the site it will fit with only modifying the heater box by cutting a notch in it for the valve cover... but you can also use a 2" body lift and not even have to do that. Just check it out, they go all the way through the process. I'm wanting to do the same thing to our 85 soon, just torn between buying their adapter plate and using my 5-speed manual or swaping it for something more robust.
i also went through the same process from the 2.9 to a 302. i am getting ready to put a 351 in mine so my 302 will fit im sure. it will also b for sale for about 1000/obo. it is n a full size 77 frame with a 84 body and has about 2900 miles on it. runs great. most of the work required is the engine mounts. if interested email me
