Steering box

I have a 1997 ford F150 4x4. Can the steering gear be adjusted? Thanks

It can be adjusted but shouldn't need to be.
Do you have some play in your steering?

steering

A mechanic checked it and said it has some play. It also needs tie rod ends replaced. I am hoping that is the cause not the steering box. Just in case how is the steering box adjusted? Thanks

A more common place for play in the steering is the shaft from the column to the steering box.
The procedure in the manual is pretty complicated. Basically you remove the pitman arm from the drag link, then you loosen the lock nut on the sector shaft stud, turn the stud until there is no play but it also doesn't bind and then tighten the nut.
Having a manual to follow would be a good idea

Hey Racer;

Is this where the 'Lower Steering Column Sector Shaft' comes into the picture? I never did know where that thing was, but my 2000 had a broken one from the dealership, and they tried to tell me I did it. Far as I was concerned, to break that, they must have dropped the truck off the delivery transport.

"'Lower Steering Column Sector Shaft" doesn't make sense to me. The sector shaft is the piece that sticks out of the bottom of the steering box. The pitman arm attaches to it. The shaft in between the steering column and the steering box is usually called either the lower steering column shaft or the intermediate shaft.

Okay, thanks. This is what the Ford service department said was wrong and what they changed to fix it. I guess they meant the lower shaft below the steering box, as opposed to the one above. It was greek to me at the time. I just wanted it fixed cause it was making all kinds of clunking noises when the steering wheel was moved.
