I know the performance diference between an open and a limited slip/posi differential but what is the visual diference? I am wonderign because i want to find a limited slip for my 94 f150 at a junk yard or somethign because i do not have 300 to 600 for a new differential out of a catalog.
I think the only visual difference on most is the metal tag that should be attached to the cover.
If I recall the tag will have lots of numbers and stuff, but if it is limited slip it will also have an "LS" buried in the numbers.
I am not a rear end expert by any stretch, but this is what I have read on this site. There are probably a few models that only come one way and do have visual clues, but most diffs look the same for LS and open versions.
If the tag doesn't say, the only way to know is to open the cover and look at the carrier. The LSD carrier will be bigger, and you will be able to see clutches behind the side gears. If you're going to use a junkyard lsd, make sure you get a re-build kit and freshen it up. Most old lsd's have been abused, and will need new clutches.
On the outside there is no difference, but could be IDed by the tag. Then again, someone could have changed it so the tag might not be accurate. Look on ebay for traction lok and you'll see what they look like. They have a clutch pack on each of the two side gears. This is ford's factory unit. If there is only side/spider gears with the pinion shaft, then it's only an open diff.
