97 expedition starting trouble

well went out tonight to start the truck (97 expedition) and the damn thing wont start popped the hood, checked the battery one of the terminals was a tiny bit corroded but nothing too bad. from what i could tell everything seemed normal, it had been running just fine earlier today. Took a hammer and pounded on the gas tank, thinking it could be the fuel pump? and voila, she starts! Tried starting it again after that, and nothing. here is my question-I dont know too much about fuel pumps, do they just quit on you like that with no warning?

Anyways, thanks guys, I guess this was more of a rant but any advice would be appreciated!

Electric fuel pumps are designed to last a long time but can go at any time. Hope this is not the case because replacment requires dropping the tank.

How many miles?

did it try to start or was it just dead, wife has a 97, she went to the store one morning, came home, went back out about an hour later, nothing, dead, battery about 3 years old, took the battery to get checked, dead, dead, dead, got a new one, presto everything fine

Yeah, a dying or dead battery will wreak havoc on these electronically controlled beasts.

Thanks for the help guys. It is actually my moms vehicle, fuel pump just so happened to quit when I was using it, just my luck! The hammer trick didnt work the second time, so I left it over night and my mom has a roadside assistance program so she phoned them in the morning and they towed it to the dealer where she bought it, she has a bumper to bumper warranty on it. Needs a new fuel pump, apparently they quoted her $618 CDN for the pump alone-outrageous!! I'm pretty sure the battery is fine, she was trying her damndest to start! ahhh well its no big deal to check the battery, I plan on doing it anyways once she gets home.

It has 130,000 kms on the odo, so roughly 81,000 miles or so? We have put about 20,000 miles on the thing since we bought it back in 2001. and this is the first repair we've ever had to do on it!

I was just wondering, is there anything you can do to prolong the life of a pump? We always keep the gas tank at least 1/4 full. We only use 87 octane, but at 84 cents/litre roughly it is too much to put higher quality in, its close to 100 bucks to fill the tank as it is! besides I have heard that higher octane gas is basically useless, unless you have your timing advanced, or a turbo etc.

thanks again, I knew I could count on ford trucks
