I just installed headers on my 57 with a Y block. I put the glass packs behind the cab and it sounds good but a little quiet. If I moved the glass packs a little closer to the engine would it have more sound to it? And would it give it a little deeper tone?
Moving them farther up would increase sound(or so I would think) as the sound from glasspacks will travel longer in the pipes. I'm not sure if it would exactly give a "deeper" sound, usually pipe diameter and muffler type have more effect in that area. When I bought mine it had duals on it with blue bottle's bolted to the manifolds and it dumped right after the 'packs under the seat! Loud it was! What type of glasspacks are you using and what diameter pipping? -4speed
I am running 2" pipes with smitty glass packs they look like old time mufflers. I guess it is about 5' of pipe before the the muffler and exit about 1' in front of the rear. I had it ran this way when just with the manifolds and it was good.
I'm assuming you also just installed the smitty's? They tend to be a mellow toned pack and fairly quiet. Try moving the pack's up and maybe dumping them under the bed or leave where is and dump'em closer to the cab. -4speed
I have used the smittys for several years and they were always mellow. I was thinking with the headers it should be louder not quieter or at least the same. I did have the headers ceramic coated and that might help to make it quieter as well. I guess? I am going to do like you said and move the packs up and see if that works. I do want to try and keep the long pipes to keep the exhaust smell away from the cab.
My glass packs seemed to wear in after a while. When I first got them they were mellow, but after a couple of months, they were much more crackly.
I was using Purple Hornies, but I think the Smittys would be similar.
If you are using shortie or street rod headers, the sound might not change much since these headers are not much different from stock exhaust manifolds. Full length headers will produce more sound. Do not move the mufflers under the cab or you will experience resonance in the cab (a loud vibrating sound...been there and done that!) I had dual Smithys on my Mustang with Try-Y headers (full length) and they were too loud. I had to replace them with turbos. If yours aren't producing the sound you want, I think you might want to experiment with larger exhaust pipe or different mufflers...
Thanks for the replys, I think I am going to leave it alone for now. I don't want any resonance in the cab. I was going to try some cherry bomb glass packs but the local pep boys has never herd of them. And after running it for a few days it is starting to sound better.
My 54 runs glass packs off the manifolds of a Y block like your 57 an it is loud , the pipes exitjust in front of the rear tires. But the only diference i see is the glass packs i have are the red cherry bombs on 2" pipe but mine have been on the truck for awhile ( im looking to quiet mine down ). I might b adding a set of turbos after the packs to qet it down a bit.
Hi im running glass packs off the manifolds of a Y block on my 54 ford also but it is real loud, the only diference i see is i have the cherry bomb type glass packs and mine have been on the truck for awhile so i think maybe they wear in.
Try riding behind your truck while someone drives it to get a good fix on how it sounds outside the cab. You all must be young 'uns if you want your trucks real loud. I used to run cherry bombs with a turn down right after the cab 20 years ago. Now I am old and deaf, i seem to say "what did you say" a lot more than I used to. Keep the sound out the back.
THanks Bob yea it is real loud not very pleasant on a long ride. thats why i want to quiet it down a bit. ( not to mention i don't want to be turning the wrong heads! ( law ) ) and the glass packs seem to more like a no muffler sound than that nice toned rumble im looking for.
