Question Stripping A Wiring Harness....

OK first I will post my question. After that I will explain my intentions so you will understand more of what I'm wanting to know.

Can I strip my computers wiring harness to where all that I have running off from it is the fuel injection, push button starting, & possible electric fuel pump?

If so, what kind of damage will it do to the computer?

Intentions......

I have a 88 F-150 2X4 that I'm stripping the body off from to repair my 88 F-150 4X4.
After I am done I'm going to have the frame, axles, transmission, engine & componets. I am wanting to cage the frame for personal protection & use the remainerd of the parts left over to build a off-road buggy with it. I am wanting to strip the harness down to just what I need.

If you want to run a Ford fuel injected motor in a homemade or older vehicle, you best bet is to get the harness and computer from Ford motorsport that is made to do that.

Most of the stuff on the engine is needed for the computer to operate properly. Anything not hooked up will at the least give a check engine light, and at the worst, it won't run at all. You need all the throttle position, coolant temp, intake air temp, etc. sensors, and the dist module. The fuel pump won't even operate unless the computer gets a signal form the original distributor.

The engine & tranny are still set in the frame & hooked to the computer. You saying if I leave that wiring along I should be fine. It is in a partial 88 F-150. I think I'm going to leave the cab also & just roll cage everything else.

What about the interior wiring? What can I strip in there?

The only thing I really need is to hook up a push buttong start in which I'm sure I can just tap into the current ignition wires, the same with after market electric gauges.

Let me know if I'm saying something that is not correct or will lead into problems. The truck is complete right now except for the front & rear bumper, front fenders, hood, doors & box. I don't want this to be road worthy, it is going to be determined for off-road anyhow.

I would leave the original ignition switch/column in place. Like another thread I just posted, the ignition switch has alot going on inside it, and it would be better to keep it intact for proper operation. If you have a automatic tranny, I would keep all the wires in place on it too. I think some of them go to the computer. There may be some wires on the clutch pedal you need to keep if you have a manual tranny.

I think you will be safe if you want to take out the interior lights/guages/radio/heater/ac/ and stuff like that.
