Narrowing spring-eyes?

I just got a 8.8 rear-end with the springs from a Granada. I'm wondering if it would be possible to narrow the spring-eyes from 2.5" to 2" (so that they would fit the existing spring hangers on my '51) without effecting the integrity of the springs? I would of course be moving the rear hangers to accomodate the extra length on the Granada springs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have you considered changing the spring hangers to 2.5"? Is your plan to grind 1/4" off each side of the eye? No opinion here, just some thoughts.
