4x4

I know we are probally not going to get any snow until next year but i want to make sure i have 4x4 next winter. I have a 92 explorer with the push button 4x4. I cleaned the shift motor 3 times this season and it keeps getting dirty again, after a few uses and it does not work, well i had 4x4 for the second to last snow storm here and then the last one i tryed to use it same thing no response when i hit the button. When i take the motor apart the copper part were the brushs ride are always dirty again but when i reasemble it, its really clean, i also clean the brushs as best as i can, Do i need a new shift motor or what, also when it does work i have to press it several times to get the light to come on.

I have found a problem wit the bearings being too stiff. I like to run the motor in before I put it back together. Remove the switch gear and the motor won't hit the stop. Even with a clean and lube, have found the motor can draw over 4A. Running in the motor with tranny fluid on the bearing will get it down to under 3/4 amp. A good test is to put a brake light in series with the motor when operated from a 12V source. A motor that will be reliable will run easily in both directions with this lamp in series. If it doesn't, it wont run long in the vehicle. If you are not getting lubricant on the brushes, the dirty brushes may be rom the motor drawing too much current. Running the motor with this reduces valtage for 15 minutes seats the brushes and works in the new lubrication.

I've never lubricated the brushs just sanded and used electrical contackt cleaner so what ever lube that was on in is not there any more, i was thinking just spend the 200 for a new motor, i have a buddy who can get me the oem motor for 200 bucks, but am just a little confuse on getting the wire that is attached to the t-case off ive been to the site but have not been able to get the wire off so i just worked on it under the vehical, but if i have to replace it i will need to get this wire off how would i? Plus it would be nice to have to push the button once and get 4x4, i think for me its better money spent gettng a new one, the to waist more time trying to repair the old,

There is a tool that allows you to remove the pin from the connector. Most people cut the brown wire and put a ruberized connector in place. If you another assembly, you will have to get that wire out of the connector or get a new one to splice in.

Brushes should be clean and free from any oil. The scintered bearing at the worm end of the motor gets very dry and stiff. You should be able to pull the shaft out, polish it, and lube the bearing with light oil.
