My 86 F-250 (351W HO) failed emissions testing in MD for Hydrocarbon emissions. I took a look at the air filter and breather and they are both wretched. The literature from the state says the PCV and EGR should also be replaced. Are these two replacements difficult? Are there any other things I should be focusing on.
Also, the engine runs great when it warms up, but is a little rough when cold. It has a manual choke set-up and the choke cable keeps getting bound up. It looks to me like the L-Bracket holding the choke cable in alignment is not strong enough to keep from flexing. Also, the cable seems to be too long, could this be a problem.
PCV valve is an off the shelf product from your local auto parts store; shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to change. If it rattles, it's working. If it don't, replace it. Only a few bucks. The EGR is a little more involved. I believe it's on the back of the intake and has a few various hoses attached to it. Still will be fairly simple to replace for a shadetree mechanic. Air filter will be simple to change as well as the oil breather, which are both available from said auto parts store. Change your oil before you go, and get the exhaust stsyem good and hot before you go in. You can also get a new choke cable assemble from the parts store. They're pretty simple to hook up. If that's in any way not letting in enough air, that would also cause hydrocarbon numbers to rise, as well as the air filter not letting in enough air.
The choke cable works, except it seems to get bound up. I think it is too long, and I think the L-bracket supplied with the kit is too flimsy. I'll try to make one up myself that is a little more robust.
