I am looking at a 1991 F-250 with a 7.3 diesel. I have not seen it, but the owner says it runs good, has new exhaust, new wiring harness for engine. It has 4wd, subercab, longbed, little rust, and new clutch. 5sp. The only thing is, 228,000mi.:-(
He wants $6250. Is this reasonable or should I pass it up. How long can these engines last? What is high miles for one of these? What is the rated horsepower and torque for this engine? He is selling it because he "wants something newer."
I have a 1989 F250 SC 4x4 long box 470,000 kms never been opened replaced injectors at 400,000 kms and did clutch at 300,000 kms have done the injection pump a few times three throttel shaft seal kept leaking. hope this helps for info.
Sounds about right on the price. But make sure you question him about DCA's (Diesel Coolant Additives) and bring along a set of test strips for the coolant. You can pick up some at any good diesel shop, they will tell you how to use them. These diesel suffer from a thing called cavitation which is where the coolant can eat holes in the clyinder walls over time. The DCA keeps this from happening. It's a very slow process. He he has never added it then walk away because you will be in for a high repair bill. The test strips will only tell you if it's in there right now, they will not be able to tell you that it was used in the past. This is why it's important to ask him and view his reaction. I learned of cavitation the hard way, I purchased my truck with the problem, cost to bring it back up was over $4000. Mine happened at 60,000 miles which was very early by everyone's standard, but the Enterprise did not get good care before I came along. All the previous owner did before me was put diesel in the tank and drive. I really question if she changed the oil from time to time.
I have an 89F-350 4x4 with a 7.3L. The truck ran fine for the first year i owned it, then i discovered i was losing coolant and found oil on the top of the rad. The truck is of the road now and i have already spent a pile of money on parts. I first thought the oil cooler seals were gone and i replaced the cooler core. The "o" rings were cracked! I stopped getting oil in my rad,(serious flushing required). Then the water pp went. After replaceing the pp I started to lose coolant even faster,(water will find the next weekest link in the system). The engine began hydro-locking, water leeking into the top of the cylender after shutdown. Now I have to remove and inspect the heads/gaskets/block for damage or cracks. I am seeking help deciding what to do in a post on the diesels forum. I would stay clear of the 7.3L engines in the 88-90 vintage. I paid $7000.00 for my truck and have put on $2500+ in parts. Another point is the manual transmission. The 4spd. with O/D has the best ratios if you do a lot of highway driving.
