so why would someone suggest using deseil oil in my torino. i am starting to doubt alot of stuff people suggest here. nothing to do with the website but some of the brain surgeons sharing information which could damage of harm peoples property.
Because it's better. It has more detergency, more anti-wear additive, a higher TBN, and no friction modifiers to break down or comprimise engine protection for gas mileage (it's not energy conserving). It's just better oil.
By diesel oil, I think he means CH-4 / SL rated oil. Notice it has the SL rating too, which makes it usable in gas engines. Many fleets who only want to keep one type of oil use this with great success.
hey rusty you just broke it down for me. all you say is correct, i did some research today and i found that it actually is a better oil where protection is the issue, only i don't know what this means for gas consumption?
so to all who suggested 15w-40 delo, you where right on, thousand appologies!!
No problem, I've made a rear-end out of myself before too; at least you owned up to it.
The effect on gas mileage will probably not be noticeable for an individual driver. However, when multiplied over millions of vehicles, it really does effect the manufacturers CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) in a big way. That's why energy conserving oils are required under warranty. However, if you attempt to notice any change, you never will. It will be lost in the noise, so to speak.
91 F-150 5.0 115,000 miles. Consumed 1 - 1.5 qts of 10w30 or HD30w between changes. Switch to 15w40........no oil consumtion at all. I felt kinda weird when I stopped having to add oil. Its true. Oil hasnt moved a bit in 3 changes now of 15w40.
I have run into this problem before more than once. As TallPaul said it is more than likely a change in brands of oil. I have personally experienced this and in talking with a chemist I was led to believe that all oils are manufactured to the same specification for viscosity however the additives vary greatly in the different brands. So, one brand may hold just fine and another will go right past the rings. Try another change going back to the Pennzoil and see if your consumption drops back to normal.
