New to this site and diesel ownership but have already learned alot thanks to this group. My problem is the other day I started my truck and during warm up while driving it started missing like it was running out of gas. And continued to get worse. I went to the parts store and bought a new fuel filter and had them scan it for any codes - none were present. When i left the store it ran fine I changed the fuel filter (it defnitely needed it) and ran fine until today it died at an off ramp from the highway. Re-started and no problem the rest of the way home. Any clues??? I have heard about all the problems with the CPS but shouldnt that throw a code? One other thing is occasionally the brake warning light comes on while driving, the brakes feel fine no mushiness and the reservoir is full. The truck is a 1997 F-250 E4OD auto longbed XLT and I am in the Denver, CO area. Mileage just clicked over 100K.
This is just a shot in the dark, but I'm having sort of the same problem. Engine just shuts off intermentently at idle, and every now and then if feel like the engine lugs. Like a mis-fire on a gas engine. Some of the lug I think if from the tranny deciding which gear to choose, under load or not, at low speed. Because of the intermentent nature, and a total engine failure, I really have been lead to think it's an electrical problem. I noticed on pre-purchase inspection that the combination switch probably needs replacement as the blinker switch felt loose and doesn't like to hold. Didn't think much of it until today I hit the blinker to change lanes with the truck in cruise control and the cruise cut out. I haven't pulled it apart yet to look at the connections, but I wonder if something in there might be loose or coroded and might be causing an electical fault. Might make the ignition switch act like it was in the off position? Seen stranger things. Let us know how this turn out for you. I'm probably chasing a wild hare here, but seems logical to a certian extent too.
