Changing brake fluid

I have a 2001 Ranger XLT, SOCH 4.0, auto tranny, 4x4 with off road package. I was wondering how often I should change the brake fluid. My mechanic said it should be done now, as I have 40,000 on the truck. I just wanted some "unbiased" opinions, Thanks!

They sell paper strips that turn from purple to another color when it detects impurities and water in the brake fluid. Short of that, about every 3-4 years is good and I do it when I am doing my rear brake drums. I bleed from all four wheels, clear fluid from each one, and the ABS valve. Might want to soak the bleeders with some WD-40 for a few days before you begin, without spraying the pads/shoes. Also, I go over the all the rubber lines in case they need replacing since I am bleeding the brakes any how.

Put a piece of wood under the brake pedal so it does not go all the way to the floor.
