Just returned from Iraq (yes, I kissed the ground upon returning) and trying to get my old truck runnin'....thing is this. I'm pretty sure (85%)it's a 302...but, not sure. The codes on the truck won't help as I'd bet this is replacement motor...although, might be the real deal. Heck, can I get some wiser than I assistance out there.
Also, my carb..Motorcraft 5150 I believe....has the smell of gas that is so strong! Rebuild or Edelbrock replacement? I'm an enlisted guy...so, as most in this forum....$ is an issue.
How long has the truck been sitting, sounds like it flooding out,or your not geting sparklook over all your plug wires, hookups, grounds, take the plugs out give them a once over with a bit of emery cloth.Pull your coil wire from the dizzy check for spark and do the same with your plugs,it wouldnt hurt to change you fuel filter,as the engine size their should be a stiker on the truck around the hood latch,it will tell you if it's a 302,windsor,or351m good luck.
The letter 'F in the VIN indicates a 302, letter 'G indicates 351.
One way to tell a 302 from a 351 is that the water pump boss on the 302 is right up next to the head, and on a 351 there is about 2 finger's space between the water pump boss and the head.
If the engine runs right without smoking or sputtering, don't be in a big hurry to rebuild or replace the carb. First look around for cracked or leaking fuel lines and especialy for vacuum lines from the evaporative emission's system back to the carburetor that may be pulled loose or cracked. Then check the carburetor itself for external leakage. You could remove the cover from the carburetor float chamber to check that the float is not stuck in the 'down' position which may be causing flooding. But if flooding is the case, it probably won't be running very well.
Welcome home Bro. Thanks for your great service from the rest of us who have it made here at home. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and with your fellow soldiers who haven`t made it back and for those who may not make it back. Without those who make these ultimate sacrifices, the rest of us would not have the freedoms we have. Thanks and God Bless!
