I own a 1999 Ford Ranger, 2.5 ltr, manual 5-speed with OD. I had it up to 95 on the interstate a couple nights ago. I was amazed the lil 4 cyl. could go that fast. I was curious when the govenor would have kicked in if i would have kept climbing mph. The spedo goes to 120. Also, after i got off of my exit ramp, i noticed that it felt like it ran so much better, and shifted easier. Whats the highest you've had your Rangers/Mazda's up to?
Had mine somewhere around 103 to 105 on the speedo (it's 4 off at 55, 6 of at 65, 7 at 75, ect) due to oversized tires, I was err uhhmmmm speed testing my newly re-geared rear diff. with new locker installed. I don't really know exactly how fast that was but there is some sort of electronic or computer cut off at that point...it's like it starts to miss.....I didn't feel it was real safe after 95 or so...the truck began to feel very light on the road....if that makes sense -
Going fast in a Ranger isn't that smart, all the time anyway. The tires were not designed to take that kind of stress. (Remember the Firestone saga, car tires on a 2 ton SUV.) I had my 2.5L up to 100 before the governor kicked me back down. I typically cruise at 80 and that seems to be about the smoothest speed in my truck.
Yeah i was going 90, and had a couple "neon-type" car's flying past me. Did 95 using Dayton Timberline All Terrain tires. I typically cruse at 80 as well, maticuno.
The governor on mine is REALLY noticeable. It is accelerating and then it feels like you shut the engine off. It slows down to about 85ish and turns back on. Then repeat as necessary.
I just wonder how fast it would go without the governor. I probably shouldnt be finding out on goodyear wranglers though.
The speed govenor cuts the ignition off till it reduces your speed.
I havnt tried it on the 92 i'm driving but my dad's 2000 F-150s kill it at about 100mph.
