Hi everyone! I have a quick question for all of you. I have a 2001 durango 4x4 that sqeaks in the front. When I took it to the mechanic, he told me that the bushings needed lubing. I think he sprayed some lubricant around them and it stopped the squeaking. That was a couple of days ago. Now the squeak is returning. I am wondering what is the best type of lubricant to use without dismantling the bushings and packing it with grease? Some have told me Tri City is good. Once I get this best lube, how do I go about lubing it. I am truly a novice but do know where the bushings are now. My mechanic told me that would be the best solution but would cost some $$.
I know that this is a Ford site, but I have an 99 Expy EB 4x4 and this site is hands down the best on the net. The dodge sites don't have any good info. like the FTE site. Thanks in advance for any answers.
Never heard of servicing bushings with grease, but I guess if there's a squeak it's gotta be addressed. I would think all the spray lubricants would be too thin to last.
you only ned to lube poly bushings, waterproof marine grease (a tub @ WalMart cost $4) works great(cheaper then the stuff they try and sell thru DayStar etc..
Rubber bushings usually squeak when they are buldged out or over tightened.
Just replace the individual bushings on the sway bar.
good luck

Thanks for the info. how do I know which type of bushing that I have? I know I can get the busjings from advanced autoparts pretty cheap, but I read that the labor to replace these is pretty expensive.
The poly bushings are hard plastic and unless youve replaced them, they are rubber. Rubber (OEM bushings) are just fine, unless you want the added stiffness of the poly bushing. You'll never have to replace the poly bushings as they rarely wear out. A set of the poly bushings usually run about $20-30 for a complete front or rear sway bar. Im unsure what Dodge/Mopar gets for the Rubber bushings??
I know Autozone carries the Energy Suspension poly bushings. Also they sell Dana (Perfect Circle branded) rubber bushings at AutoZone as well for $20 /ea
id save labor and replace yourself . You can do this job in your driveway with simple 1/2" drive socket w/metric wrenches. Takes maybe an hour at most if you havent done it before. Plus you learn about your vehicle whilst doing it.
Thanks for the info. once again. I do have a couple of questions for you though. If I do go ahead and replace the bushings, I do not need to replace the sway bar correct? How do I know if that needs to be replaced? Is the sway bar connected to the bushings? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but car parts and me don't really go together rightnow. I am slowly learning thanks to people like you. Thanks again.
