exploding window

Last night I was driving north on I55, about 25 miles north of Canton, MS, in left lane doing about 80 when suddenly there was a flash of light loud explosion and my window exploded. Almost lost control, I was able to pull over and asked my wife if she was ok. I asked her to call cops, she did and told them same story over the phone without any input from my side. Waited for cops for about half an hour, nobody came. We also called Ford emergency assistance, they gave us phone number of local dealer in Canton, service department was closed of course.
It was cold going back home to LA, we had no other option but to return, going to LSU game in AK became a secondary problem.
I would like to know if anyone has ever seen or heard anything like this before. Last night when we got home we both took a closer look at driver door and window frame and I found some scratches that I am positive were not there before. Miro

The same thing happened to my Mom several years ago. Turns out it was lightning. Blew the passenger window out.

It happened to me once back in the 80's, though there was no burst of light that I saw. I was driving on the beltway in Washington DC during rush hour in a fairly new 86 Escort GT when all of a sudden the passengers side front door glass just shattered. I couldn't have pulled over in all that traffic if I had wanted to so we made our way back to the hotel room and I found a glass service to replace the glass. So much for a vacation trip to the White House.
To this day I don't know why the glass shattered.

Skys were clear last night, so I would say that it was not lightening.
I found some new scrutches on my rear door window (250 crew cab) and some white substance around rubber framing of the window. I don't know what to think of it, I know we were very lucky. Now I got to go and clean all that glass from my truck and hope that new glass is not to expensive. Thanks for your responses, Miro

I had the same thing happen to me around 1968. The back glass in my Dodge car shattered for no reason while driving down the road. It scared the crap out of me.
