Hi i recently became th owner of a 54 fod F100 pickup with a 239 v8, i have a couple of questions i hope someone with more knowledge ofthe older v8 s can help me out with. My first question is, was this truck a 1 volt system with negative ground ? or a six volt positive ground system ? Th problem im having is the starter went in the truck and i repleced it with a rebuilt one but after the starter was replced the batery wire going to the voltage regulater kept heating up, i found out it had welded itself shut so fred them up and that cured that problem , but now my amp meter runs backwards if yo race the engine the amp gage goes to discharge instead of charge.
the guy at the part store tells me the generator is running a reversed field now and i need to re polarize it. I did what he said by flashing the field and batery wires to repolarize the generator but it didnt help.
ay help would be greatly appreciated ... thanks guys!!!
It is a six volt system unles someone has already converted it to 12 volt. Are you sure you have the positive lead on the correct bolt on the starter. Make sure your goung is attached as well to the proper bolt.
Ok thank so the 54 f100 were originally a 6 volt system. If it was converted to a 12 volt system would it use a standard negative lead for a ground wire like a modern car? Or would the positive lead of the battery be ground on the 12 volt battery like the 6 volt system ?

Usually... when someone changes the 6 volt system over to 12 V, they use the negative ground, but... you never know what was in a previous owner's mind!
