I'm currently looking at buying a truck for my fence business. I found a '86 f350 dually w/ a 300 I6 and a 4 speed flatbed. I don't know the rear end ratio, but the tag reads this:
V1908
10 10 2 5W 28
Can't find any rust, guy has the reciepts for the rebuilt motor(says it's only got 7-8 miles on it) and a few other patrs, totaling $3248, and is asking $3000 for it. But I need a truck thant can pull 6K pounds daily. I don't need no rocket, but I don't want soething that's gonna dog on hills. Does this sound like a good towing truck, with about 5-700 pounds of tools on the bed? Thanks for the help.
The 300" six is a workhorse but definitely NOT a racehorse. Lots of torque, with the proper gearing it should do fine. Mileage will not be great but it will do the job. Back in the sixties they used them in school busses so I would assume it can do what you need done. Gearing will be key.
If you can get the axle code off the door sticker it should identify the axle ratio it was built with.
If you're going to be pulling that weight every day, I would look for a truck with a big block or a diesel. Otherwise, the truck sounds like it would be great.
The numbers on the door jamb are too faded to read, but I'm thinking it's a 4.10. I wouldn't have that much weight on it everyday, but my trailer alone wieghs in at 2450, and I'm at about 3000 lbs of sand and stone full. That may dip a little lower, but for the most part I"ll hae some material on top of that. Guess I'll keep looking for a bit, but with this one in the back of my head. Thanks guy.
We have an 82 F250 on the farm with a 300I6 and a C6 with a shift kit. It used to be used to tow a very large Case Backhoe on a goosneck flatbed every day so i don't see why it wouldn't
Yeah, its' got a 4 speed w/ granny gear, so I'm assuming it a ZF tranny. That gives me a little bit of optimism(about towing the Case). I would love to get a diesel, but I don't have enough benjamins to allow that. The truck hasn't been inspected since "89, which makes me a little leary. I'll probally test drive it, but keep searching. THanks for the knowledge and opinions.
