Tranny Question

Hi all;
Just came across the forum and am impressed. Have a question. Currently have an '87 F150 with the inline 6 and a t18 four speed. Trans is acting up (hard shifting) and I think it's just the hyd clutch. Havn't checked yet. Question is if the trans is hurt and needs a rebuild, how stout are they? I have a 351W that I want to build to swap into this truck. Not going to radical or to big with the tires, but I am wondering if it is worth rebuilding this trans to keep behind the V8 or should I start looking for something else. Thanks for your help...Shawn

Do a search specific to your question "hard shifting". You'll find a lot of threads on it. Also look in the tranny forum for answers. I read alot about changing the type of fluid in it.

I bet you a million bucks it's the clutch. I have the same exact truck and drivetrain and I had that hard shifting problem, turns out it was the clutch. It almost takes a miracle to break a T18 trans.

Some pu from your era had flexing firewalls. This causes the clutch master to not travel as far as it should. My E150 has the clutch master on the floor and it flexed with hard shifting as a result.

Hi all, sorry so long to get back. The clutch, firewall and or hydraulics were not the culprit this time. Apparently when you let the T18 get really low on oil for a long time they will break. When I pulled the tranny out for inspection I found the input shaft bearing had come apart and allowed the headshaft to walk around and destroy itself and the countershaft gear. No problem, I'll just swap in good gears from the donor trans out of the parts truck I picked up. Oh No, closer inspection reveals that the countershaft roll pin has broken and allowed the countershaft to spin and egg out the bore in the front of the case. Plan B, swap my 4wd tailshaft into the2wd donor tranny and reassemble. Anyway we are back up and running all sealed and full of 80-90. Thanks to all for your help....Shawn

has far has strength, the t-18 is partically indestrucatable, that tranny was a 1 ton rated tranny that ford used in all there trucks from broncos to the f-150 thru the f-350, there any easy tranny to rebuild to if you go to jeffsbroncograveyard.com you an pick up a rebuild kit for around $100 and a master rebuild kit for around $150

I have to agree. My T18 has 145000+ on it and has probably ran the last year with a tablespoon of gear oil. Can't ask for tougher than that. They also are as simple as a rock to repair as I have recently found out. I am contemplating repairing the damaged case or looking for a used one and doing a complete rebuild to go behind the 302 I am swapping in. Any ideas where I might find a used case and some gears?
