E4OD Over-heats
I have a '92 F250HD 4WD that is mostly stock. I've owned from new and it has 85K miles on it. The trans/converter was replaced by Ford two years (12K miles) ago. I was told by the dealer that the new (reman) trans supplied by Ford had all of the updates done to it. I run Valvoline Mercon in it and have it serviced every 10K with a full draining. The truck came with a factory trailer tow set-up and a trans cooler.
Ever since it was new, and through both transmissions, I have had the same problem ******* me: I do a lot of back country travel in the desert. Occasionally during long slow climbs, the trans will get hot enough to suddenly, and rapidly, spew out about a quart of fluid from the torque converter housing (not the vent on the top.) This has also happened when I am backing up a slight grade with a trailer. After cooling down, there is no further fluid leak and the fluid appears and smells normal.
The engine shows no sign of significant temp increase when it happens. It has happened in hot weather and when it is snowing. I've tried running it in 4H and 4L ranges with the selector in "D" and in "L" and I still get the same problem. To add to the frustration, this doesn't happen every time
I've considered an aux trans cooler, a fan on the trans cooler and switching to Mobil 1 Syn ATF but I'd rather try and get to the problem without modifying the truck. The local trans shops and the dealer can offer no fix. Can anyone help me? with this?
Thanx

A fan on the transmission cooler should fix it. You do still have the transmission cooler in the radiator connected, right? That helps a lot at low speeds, too.
