I just bought the truck a month ago and put a new engine. I know that the gears in the rear end were just changed by the guy that I bought it from. Do the front and rear gears have to be the same ratio. I don't think it's the transfer case, because if I leave the hubs unlocked and shift to 4x4 the front drive shaft turns with no problem.

Ford designed it so the front would pull a bit, so you wouldn't fishtail. Front wheel drive for them slickery conditions.
It sounds like somebody put highway gears in your truck, you'll need to replace those gears. http://www.ringpinion.com I highly recommend Randys, very good prices, awesome service.
