1979 ford 4x4

Can anyone help me. I'm trying to figure out why my rear brakes lock up when I put my truck in fourwheel drive.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Do they lock up as soon as you shift into 4x4? If so, I would think that you may have a transfer case problem and not a brake problem

Could it be binding from a gear mismatch?

My first thought too. Also double check that your tires are all the same diameter.

I just bought the truck a month ago and put a new engine. I know that the gears in the rear end were just changed by the guy that I bought it from. Do the front and rear gears have to be the same ratio. I don't think it's the transfer case, because if I leave the hubs unlocked and shift to 4x4 the front drive shaft turns with no problem.

Yes, they must match. If not, one driveshaft tries to turn faster than the other and binds up the transfer case.

They can also be one fraction different.
ie:4.11 rear <> 4.10 front.

4.10 Rear <> 4.09 front

Ford designed it so one axle was always dragging or pulling... I forget which

Ford designed it so the front would pull a bit, so you wouldn't fishtail. Front wheel drive for them slickery conditions.

It sounds like somebody put highway gears in your truck, you'll need to replace those gears.
http://www.ringpinion.com I highly recommend Randys, very good prices, awesome service.
