I've obtained a 460 from a '90 E-350 Van to replace the tired motor in my '77 F-350. Can I use any mechanical fuel pump that fits the 460 block or do I need a specific model year pump? I believe the '90 engine had an electronic pump as the fuel pump port on the block is blocked off with a plate. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
Yes, you can remove the plate and bolt on any 460 fuel pump, but there is nothing inside the timing cover to drive the pump. You will need to add a fuel pump eccentric to the front of your camshaft, you should just be able to take the one off of your "tired" engine and use it. That will fix the fuel pump problem, but you have a bigger problem that you may or may not know about. You cannot put a carbureted intake manifold on the fuel injected heads, therefore you will have to use your old heads which you probably don't want to do or have someone make an adapter to be able to bolt a carburetor to your fuel injected intake manifold.
Also I forgot make sure you use the flexplate from the "90" model engine with the "90" model engine because it is externally balanced whereas your "77" is internally balanced and you could ruin you engione swap otherwise.
I don't believe it had fuel injection as it has a stock intake manifold on already. I will be putting on an Edelbrock Streetmaster intake with an Edelbrock 750 carb. It has an Elgin RV cam in it now. Would that have the eccentric to drive a fuel pump or would I just be better off to stay with an electric?
Look at your heads if they are an E7TE casting number it is a fuel injected engine, If the intake doesn't have the upper plenum on it , it will look like a regular carbureted intake ......almost. if so you will not be able to put a carb intake on it and you will still need to put on an eccentric.Im not sure but the intake may be modified a little to accomodate a carburetor.
The eccentric will look like a round offset piece that bolts onto the front of the cam timing gear. And yes it may be easier to use an electric fuel pump with regulator.
