When I first bought my Ranger used, the shift **** was already off. I used some RTV silicone and put it back on. It worked great until a week ago when the shift **** actually broke. Apparently the **** is constructed from a plastic core with a soft rubber sheath around it. While driving down the highway the plastic part split down the middle and the top fell off in mid-shift. My hand slipped off and the plastic shard that remained on the shaft cut a pretty good gash in my hand. I put a chunk of walnut on the lathe and made a **** identical to the stock one and now have that siliconed on (with the help of some Red Bull can strips to fill space). I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has actually had their shift **** /break/. Not just fall off but physically break off.
No, i've never had it fall off to the point that i couldn't just screw it back on. There are a lot of aftermarket shift ***** you can buy that will fit, unless of course, you prefer the look of authentic walnut.
I just bought an 04' Edge and want to change the shift ****. Where can I find aftermarket *****? It doesnt appear as if it screws off. (I was hoping it would)
maticuno, speaking of custom wood fabrication, look at the picture in my gallery. My brother wanted me to replace the door locks on his 96 Escort since someone had broken them out. While I was at it, I decided to "fix" the interior door handle too, since it had fallen off a while back. we looked at the junkyard, but his was the only kind with that particular style of door handle. I was hoping that after i put on the custom wooden door handle, he wouldn't ask me to do anything else on his car for him, but i think he actually likes it since his car is pretty much a joke anyway.
Benjam04Edge, almost any aftermarket shift **** will work. To take yours off you need a very hot blow drier or a heat gun. The epoxy that holds the **** on is heat sensitive. If you live in the desert like I do, just leaving it parked in the sun all day with the windows up will get it hot enough to pop right off. As I've recommended before, RTV silicone can be used to put the new **** on.
I had the same problem. Mid-shift. The **** didn't just fall off, it got a nice crack in it. I got mine used, too.. a 1999 Ranger XLT. Maybe it's just a problem on used vehicles?
