I noticed the posts in the group seem to be 100% Ford... Anyone with advice on a 2004 AWD Luxury Mercury Mountaineer? I wish there was a dealership like Van Bortel out here in California selling Mercurys!!!
If anyone knows of a dealer please let me in on it!!!
The Mountaineer is mechanically-identical to the Explorer, with one exception: the Mountaineer only offers AWD, aswhere the Explorer has both AWD and 4WD options. Depending on how you drive, there are times when the AWD will not be as good as 4WD. If you never go off-road, if you'll never drive in deep snow, then don't worry about it. At that point, it just comes down to which "look" you prefer. I think it was smart on the part of Ford to make the Mountaineer look truly different from the Explorer, instead of just giving it a different grille. Ford dealers should be competing with Chevy, Toyota, Dodge, etc... Mercury dealers should be competing with Buick, Volvo, Chrysler. More often than not, the two Ford divisions are competing with each other for customers, which is ludicrous. Customers are wise enough today to realize that a Ford with a different grille and a different name is still a Ford. At least the Mountaineer has enough different features to justify the price.
tm2391, I just returned from a trip from orlando fl. in my 2004 mercury mountaineer AWD with the 4.6 engine and all I can say is this is by far the best suv I have had the pleasure of driving and owning. Got 19 mpg on the hwy running 80 to 85 mph,and in some stop and go in or near Atlanta on I75. The AWD is a great option,it make's the suv handle great, especially in the rain. Test drive both,as I did and I beleive you will buy the mountaineer.
I only wish I could find as honest as a dealer who is willing to pass the savings on to their customer as Mark does for Mercurys.
I do prefer the look of the Mountaineer to the Explorer EB (I am not too sure Ford is trying to sell EBs to 20-30 year olds with that gold molding or oak trim anyway) and am currently debating between the Mountaineer in a V6 or V8. I drive alot with a heavy foot.
TNFord, sounds like you got great gas milage compared to others I have read about on the net, I have yet to drive a mountaineer as I HATE visiting dealers - the last Mercury dealer kept taking me to the used side of the lot and hesitated to tell me about the rebates for the new cars!
Glad to hear you like the Merc Mount'eer. I have a 98.....viurtually a twin of an explorer. AS stated....different grill and bodyside moldings. I do get alot of comments about her looks. ALot of people think she's brand new.
I bought the 03 in 03, after driving the V8 & V6 mountaineer as well as both exlorer's, I went with the Mountaineer, it feels more nimble, more features for the $$. Go with the 8, 1 mpg less then the six, and it's got better punch for passing and getting on the freeway. If in northern ca, buy from Joe Kerley in San Jose, they do a good job of taking care of customers.
I have a 04 Montineer and it is sweet. AWD is worth it and unless you do any major off roading, there is really no need for 4x4. I live in new england and we had over 2 feet of snow out here durring one storm this winter, this SUV handled great in it.
GET THE V8! you'll love how powerful it feels mated to the 4 speed auto.
