brakes not working; code 302

My 97 SOHC (105K) started up rough one day...running very rough...and the brakes required tremendous force to get the car to stop at slow speeds. Mechanic says code 302 appears, says it needs cylinder head, at 2000 plus.

I think the problems are related...could this be a simpler problem of some sort of vacuum leak causing the brake problem and a non-firing cylinder? Or some other fuel problem?

Thanks for any help.

CheckThe vacum line from the booster to the engine ,there is a little plastic value that the hose attaches to at the booster that might be bad. The booster it self might be bad. Also checkfor any other vacume leaks.JMO

My 86 ranger is doing something very similar. It will start up and run fine, but there's almost no pressure behind the brakes and when I push'em to the floor the engine will die. It's like it cuts off the vacuum. any thoughts?
