Melted EGR Sensor

I was driving back to Savannah from Orlando today and my explorer started shuttering. It only did it when there was a load on the engine. My check engine light started flashing (it was already on because of codes that said the fuel-air mixture was too lean). I couldn't find any place that was open to pull the codes but I stopped at a parts store and showed the guy what it was doing. It would shutter if I put it in drive, held the brake and applied gas. He said that it could be a plug or wire. I needed to do that anyway so I bought the stuff and drove home. As I was replacing the plugs and wires, I came across a hose that had busted. I wasn't sure what it was (small hose), however while looking to see where it had been attached, I found this. I'm sure this was my problem all along. I just have to wait till the parts store opens to get a replacement. Has anyone seen this happen before? Could this have been caused by something else that I need to be aware of?

Thanks.

That is the DPFE sensor. They are known to go out from time to time. Any of your local parts places should have one.

Well at least you know what part needs replacing ! I know the hoses have to be of a high temperture tolerance so just dont replace these with any hose. Also sometimes the sensor has to go with you particular egr valve and engine. My 94 explorer has two different types for that year.

I picked up the part from Advance Auto and replaced it. I also picked up the hoses too. The guy tried to sell me regular hoses first but I told him that it should be high temp. hoses. It's running great now.
