Mileage Question
1) Carfax, but they are not 100% reliable. Especially true for older rigs (say 6+ years).
2) Call Ford service department and have them run the vin through OASIS and tell you how many miles were on any records.
3) Visit your state licensing agency and see what records they have. Tell them you want to track it back to day one and if it came from out of state ask them where it came from. Get the mileage from them when it came to your state (assuming they record that info). Bonus points if the rig was registered where they have emissions or annual safety checks as there is a good chance the mileage was databased with the government.
4) How worn are the brake/parking brake/gas pedal pads?
5) How worn is the carpet on the drivers side?
6) How worn is the uphostery on the drivers seat? Does the foam feel firm when compared to sitting on the drivers side?
7) With 40,000 miles, there should be original tires or quite new ones. All of the tires should match (size and manufacturer).
8) How worn is the key?
9) How clean is the undercarriage, especially when compared with that 40,000 mile rig you looked at?
10) Are there lots and lots of paint chips in the front? How about the glass, is the windshield sandblasted?
11) Here are some parts to look at to see if they are OEM motorcraft: Plugs, wires, belt(s), rad/heater hoses, and shocks.
12) How clean is it under the hood compared to the 40,000 miles used rig you looked at?
13) How much wear is on the steering wheel where you placed your hands?
These items, when evaluated, should help you gauge if that 40K on your clock is honest, or if the mileage is higher.
