Alrighty heres the deal. I will be getting an f250 or 350 probly trying for a 460. I plan on towing whith it but not a huge amount. It will be dragging around my 82 F-150 whith a 4.9L, i am guessing about a 6K-7K trailer. So now the advice part, what kind of years should i shoot for. I was kinda whanting to keep the 80-96 body style and hopefully get an ext. cab. So should i shoot for a carbed or injected motor? How much more dificult is the injection to take care of? Thanks for answering the questions
Heres a thought in a different direction...why dont you think about a pre power stroke diesel for tuggin your truck around.....auto credit at division and foothills has one.......I think its a 90..its on the division side of the parking lot, almost all the way at the north end of their lot
The EFI models will probably have better low end torque and gas mileage. The Ford EFI system is a very reliable unit. If you can get one with MAF (mass air flow), that's even better. I don't know on the 460's if they were all speed density or if the later (mid 90's) had MAF.
well im not going to be doing a bunch of towing and i dont know word one about diesels so hence why i whant to go whith a big block. As far as Auto Credit there on Devision, i have been eyeing that place for a long time. It looks like they have some decent rigs in there. But the biggest thing i have to do first is get my 90 Isuzu sold
Didnt know anything about gas engines at one point either though right?
Besides its fun to learn, dont let that sway your decision, if however you just dont want a diesel, that makes more sense, besides you got FTE to help you learn about diesels right
A EFI system is more reliable and powerful if you go with gas, I agree, however a carb system is simpler....pick your poison
The stock ford 460 motors with the efi are pittiful. A carbed 460 with the timming chain corrected, duel exhaust and aftermarket aluminum intake will pull circles around any efi 460. I personally would look for the 80-93f350's because in the 4x4 they still had a solid front axle(dana 60) and usually with 4.10's. If you don't want 4x4 then i say what ever year suits you. Also the pre powerstroke deisels were reliable but slow and weak, the turboed deisels right before the powerstrokes(i think they cam out in 1993or1994) were better but not by much. also I am not just saying this i have driven and pulled with all three, and give my choice i would go with the pre efi 460's and early deisels for the power and ease of tunning and building up, and over the late model deisels because of the lower maintenance costs.
I agree. any diesel from that era will be slow, and sluggish, I dont know about "weak" in the sense that it wont get the job done, it'l pull what you throw at it, just dont expect it to do it quickly.....more efficiently and cheaper on fuel than an old 460, but probably slower than an old 460. thats just the nature of early technology diesel engines.
I think you've gotten some great advice in this thread..... best of luck to you!!!!!!!!
