Well I finally got around to replacing my fuel filter for the first time, have 30,879 on the clock. I was sure I would find something living it the bowl......nuthin! It was completly clean, no fungus or ugly looking stuff on the sides. Now the filter elements were a dark brown, almost black.....
Oh and to give some feedback on filter #'s, the filter International sold me was $25 bucks and Fleetguard p/n FF5418, not the #'s that have been posted here before. Well it matched the oem unit right down to the #'s on the side
I got mine from Autozone, i think it was $29, a little expensive, but immediate aquisition. The filter wors great, easy to install and comes with new top and seal.

You can get that same filter from diesel injection service for under $12. You should always carry a spare anyway, so order in advance.
Coachhomer-
If you've still got the original filter cap, hang on to it. If you ever decide to use anything except what you've got now, you'll need it. I had to replace mine because the lugs were broken off, (by the previous owner), and though they're not prohibitively expensive, they cost more than you'd think they should, even through International.

When I bought my truck (used) it had the Autozone filter on it. I could never get it to seal right so I went to buy the plastic cap from Ford so I could put the 'real' filter in. They wanted $50 for it! And yes, I ended up shelling out the cash.
