Ol' Blue

I have a 1984 f-150 with a 351M automatic. The truck has 256,000 miles (built ford tough) and has never had a major problem until now. The transmission will not shift it feels like it is in 2nd can anyone give me any help. This truck was my grandfathers and I want to keep it running as long as I can.

Thanks

What kind of transmission? If nothing has ever been done to the transmission, then I'd say you and your grandfather got your moneys worth. Trannys probably shot. You could try changing the tranny filter but with that many miles, I'd guess it'll need a new one. If it's a c6 tranny, you can replace it with your core for around $450-$600 bucks from what I've seen, and that'd be a good rebuilt one. I've seen Junkyards have 'em anywheres from $150-$350. Someone else here may have a good idea on where to get a good tranny for cheap.

I would check to she if the vacum modulator is hooked up or blown off before pullin the tranny . On my 82 the vacum line rotted and it hung in 2 and would rarely hit 3rd my friend got a hell of deal he bought a 77 f250 supercab 460 35 mud kings for 500 bucks because the owner thought the tranny was shot . 3 bucks worth of vacum line solved the problem

I had the same truck and at 188,000 had to buy a rebuilt C6. Worth the $500 I paid.
