Ranger 93, 4 cyl.( 8 spark plugs and coil pack model) 2.3L, 5sp. I think I have a quite typical problem for this model, but I could not find anyone with a solution so far. It is running rough, shaking ,missing, even stalling every time I cold start it. The problem is gone as soon the motor gets warm. So far I have replaced :ECG valve, spark plugs and spark plugs wires, both coolant temp sensors. I will appreciate any helpfull hints and comments from members. Thank you in advance.
It has been done , and the code pointed at ECG valve which was replaced but it did not help. I have noticed that many members had identical problem. I am hoping that someone was able to fix it and will help me out. Most of the mechanics will not touch it, because its hard to fix. One told me that my truck is loaded with emision control components and there is nothing that can be done.
Pull the codes again and post them here. Never again return to the grease monkey that says it's "hard to fix" or that "nothing can be done". Fixing problems such as yours is what they do (or are supposed to know how to do anyway) for a living. Those answers are unacceptable. BTW, just because you replaced a component such as the coolant sensor doesn't insure that the new part is good; new parts are sometimes bad.
Also the code may point to a system but you MUST run the pinpoint tests to determine the exact cause. I agree, thats not a mechanic I would want working on my truck.
Could be the DPFE sensor, and or a bad coil on one side. I had both of those problems and I was getting 16 mpg, and no power!
I tested one coil and the other one was bad so I overlooked it!!! TEST BOTH COILS!
Tell that idiot mechanic friend that ALL CARS HAVE EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT nowadays and he needs to update his skill set. Ford OBD-I cars are the easiest ECU / injected cars I have ever worked on! You can pull codes with a paperclip! and on your 93 the codes are 3 digits.
Oh make sure you do the KOER test because that will pinpoint which EGR code you have, the KOEO code only points you in the general direction. The EGR valve is usually never the culprit because ford has had 20+ years to perfect that design....
