460 Donor need help rebuilding. please

Hi to all.

I have a 77 F250 that i put a 390 in, non she's worn out. I have found a 1977 F250 with a 460 in it as a donor and i plan to to make this the last transplant for this truck, as i now have the ideal set up that i was looking for. So gentlemen I'm looking for some help.

1a. I want to do a rock solid rebuild. I don't tow heavy loads very often except when i go camping even then the load is minimal

1b. I don't want to to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars, don't have that kind of cash.

1c. I want to rebuild it myself, i have liimited mechanical abilities and I have only rebuilt one motor with the assistance of a friend. This time it is for me and my personal satisfaction.

1d. This 460 motor is going in my 77 F250 extended cab i drive it frequently and would like to get the best fuelmileage possible, I not expecting anything special but i don't want to get a consitent 7 mpg like some of the complaints i've heard. I need a good set up? But I don't know what that would be.

1e. I'm respectfully requesting the help of anyone who can enlighten me. In the past i have read other posts to questions asked and some of the replies look like they were pulled out of someone's #&*. So please add as much detail as possible to any suggestions, sometimes i don't see the point the other person is trying to make, the more info the better. Thanks

1f. This truck has been a dream of mine for the past 5 years and i want to get the motor right. Then i want to drive it for a very long time, providing the cost of gas doesn't break me

2. What I'm looking for is, other members rebuild setups and why they worked good for them? I would truly appreciate information in this regard.

3. After i have the 460 on an engine stand what should i do first? Does any one have a detailed list of things to do or an order in which they should be done? Or could you take the time and tell me the steps and processes to go through

For example getting the stock heads redone, I don't know the lingo or what to ask for.?

Cam shaft i don't know what cam to use( i explained earlier how i want to use my truck) but where do i go form here?

The block, does it have to be rebored? Do i have to buy new pistons? Can I not just put new rings in etc.

I would like some headers but what is the affordable way to go?

I heard a story about changing the camshaft gear and getting a different timing chain like one for a canmper????????? by doing this you will get better fuel milage?????????? Does anyone know about this.( guy told 20 mpg)

If you have read up to this point i truly thank you. Please give me any advice on first step to last step in the rebuild, and what the exact parts i should use. The only truck parts I have access to are on line and from the local parts store(there are three in this town), wrecking yards are slim pickings

Short version...what parts do i need to buy to rebuild this motor and can you give me step by step instuctions,

Thank your time
( i also have another F250 with a 390 that i want to do up I'll get into that in another post.)

Dean Hill/fordaholic

I also have a complete 390 with tranny i can swap for parts and i have an extra set of 390 heads and an extra intake manifol two or four barrel and i guess lots of misc stuff. If anybody wants to do some horse trading i live in Winnipeg Manitoba

well, you are not going to be able to get the whole list at one time, the reason is,there are things that have to be done in sequence,so I will try and help you all I can,but there are going to be times when you wont be able to go further until you get your results back from the various shops, the first thing to do,after draining the oil,is strip it down to bare block, when you have, you will take it to a machine shop to have it gone over, they will ck for stress cracks, measure the bore, etc.Once they have done this, then you will have a better idea weather you will need to bore it.My own personal view on bore is that if you are not wanting high performance, just durability and as good of gas milage as possible, then I would not bore it unless I had too because of excessive wear.At the same time you can also give the machine shop, your crank, and heads.they will inspect and measure the crank and let you know if it will be usable as is with new bearings,or if it needs to be ground, and they can also go over your heads checking, valves, valve guides, valve seats, deck surface and such.once they give you all this info, then you will know better what to do as far as oversized pistons or rings, etc.

The first step is to buy some books. Try these two first:
